We roast our coffee where it grows because that’s the fair thing to do.

Grinding Types

The coffee grind type is basically how thick the coffee is prior to its final preparation. The roasted coffee beans go through a grinder and from there on they can come out as if they were talc (extra fine grind) or in looser particles (coarse grind).

The truth is that there is no universal way to measure grinding, it is not a matter of cubic centimeters or milligrams since each mill can handle its own scale.

However, there is a general rule that you must keep in mind which is that the thickness of the grind should increase as the coffee extraction time is extended, according to the preparation method; that is, the longer the contact time between water and coffee, the larger the size of the grind.

Now, the coffee extraction time depends on the preparation method and the coffee device you are going to use; for example, an Italian coffee maker requires a fine grind because extraction takes a few seconds. In order not to get too confused, take a look at this chart and choose the grinding type according to the 'tools' you have at home:

Grind grade or size Recommended coffee makers
  • Extra fine Cezve (turkish copper vessel)
  • Fine Italian o Moka Express
  • Medium fine AeroPress - V60 – Japanese siphon
  • Medium Chemex
  • Medium thick Kalita Wave - Clever Dripper
  • Thick French press
